SERVI DORYL OPTIMISES ITS WASTE MANAGEMENT

Servi Doryl is very careful about sorting and recycling its plastic waste. The company has already carried out several recycling operations with its customers and their former mould parks.

However, the continuous improvement of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) policy is pushing the company to take a greater interest in the treatment of its waste: collection, sorting and also recovery. To this end, Servi Doryl recently welcomed Maëlle Levant, a trainee in waste management at the IUT in Tours. Her main missions are to improve the company’s waste management and the efficiency of sorting in order to reduce the quantity of CIW and to optimise the recovery of sorted waste.

When she arrived, Maëlle first made an inventory of the company’s waste by :

  • finding the sources where they come from: workshop, office, refectory… ;
  • identifying their type: paper, cardboard, metal, plastic etc. ;
  • and assessing their volume and recyclability.

This stage enabled Maëlle to identify the different types of waste present at Servi Doryl and to establish an action plan to deal with them in the long term.

1 – Improving sorting

Once sorted, the waste can be transformed into secondary raw materials. This is why, in order to optimise Servi Doryl’s sorting management, several containers (one per type of waste) have been placed close to the points of consumption by employees (workshop, offices, cafeteria).

Each container has a different colour depending on the waste to be sorted :

  • Yellow for recyclable cardboard and plastic packaging: aluminium trays, cans, plastic bottles, etc ;
  • Blue for paper: envelopes or sheets of paper ;
  • Red for magazines and newspapers ;
  • Brown for cardboard : packaging and/or protective cardboard ;
  • Green for wood: plywood and chipboard ;
  • Black for non-recyclable waste: food scraps, tissues, plastic bags and films, etc.

To avoid sorting errors and to give all the necessary information to the employees, Maëlle has created posters dedicated to each of the containers. She reminds them of the list of waste to be put or not.

2 – Raising awareness of waste sorting among employees

To reduce and manage its waste in an optimal way, Servi Doryl wishes to involve all its employees. The objective is that they feel committed, valued and aware that what they do in the name of waste sorting will contribute to the company’s development. Moreover, by encouraging the employees to take part in the sorting of the company’s waste, it will allow to reinforce the cohesion in the collective and to make the link with the sorting done at home.

To this end, each month, a poster on the theme of “waste management” will be sent by e-mail to all Servi Doryl employees. It will also be displayed on the CSE (Social and Economic Committee) notice board.

For example, the first awareness campaign answered the question: “Why sort? “.

3 – Opening new sorting channels

With the aim of recovering its waste, Servi Doryl has set up two new sorting channels :

  • Reuse of its pallets : when they are in good condition, they are resold and reused for a second life.

However, if too worn, they are collected and used as firewood.

  • Collection of surgical masks : In France, between 7 and 43 million masks are used per day. Therefore, in order to avoid the millions of tons of additional waste generated by these masks, Servi Doryl provides collection tubes in offices and production area.

Surgical masks are made of non-degradable materials : plastic (polypropylene), elastics and metal clips. All these materials can be recycled and therefore reused.

4 – Recovering waste

Recycling is both a financial and an ecological issue for industrial companies like Servi Doryl. This is why, after having collected and sorted its waste, it is recovered by a company also located in Langeais. Whether it is metal waste, CIW, plastic, paper… Our partner has the capacity to optimise their revalorisation.

For example, waste paper and cardboard are transformed into Cellulosic Recycling Fibres used in paper mills.

The metal waste is sorted into batches before being returned to foundries and steel mills for reuse as secondary raw material.

Plastics also have an excellent recycling capacity.

This is how Servi Doryl gives a second life to its waste.

All these actions in terms of waste management will enable the company to reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill, as required by the green growth bill, and also to strengthen its environmental and societal commitments.
